They often differ in the care and services they provide. Below is a listing of some of the most common types of older adult housing available. They are listed in order
from Most Independent, providing little or no medical or
personal care services, to Least Independent, providing

55+/Retirement Communities:

Retirement communities can be any housing arrangement designed exclusively for elders (over age 55) who do not need assistance with medical or personal care. Retirement communities cover a broad range of housing facilities. Most of these communities provide meals and access to private or common areas for meals and socializing.

Intergenerational Housing:

Intergeneration Housing has a specified number of units for seniors, together with a specified number of units for younger-aged persons or families. Activities and supportive services for tenants may or may not be included. This type of housing is typically not licensed or regulated by a government agency.

Continuing Care:

Continuing-care retirement communities offer different types of housing on one campus. These campuses provide a continuum of housing and care services from independent living to assisted living and skilled nursing care. Residents can move from one facility to the next, as their care needs change.

Assisted Living:

An assisted living facility, sometimes referred to as residential care, is a supportive housing facility designed for those who need extra help in their day-to-day lives but who do not require 24-hour skilled nursing care found in traditional nursing homes.

Nursing Homes:

A nursing home is a facility with 3 or more beds that provides nursing or personal care services to older adults, the infirm, or chronically ill. Alzheimer Care:

There are facilities offering specialized programs for residents suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other forms of memory loss. These programs are often found in residential, assisted living or nursing home facilities.

Hospice:

Hospice is care rendered either on an inpatient basis or in the home setting for a terminally ill patient. Also referred to as "palliative" or "supportive" care, hospice emphasizes the management of pain and discomfort, and provides emotional support of the patient and family.
